How to Choose Polymer Clay Cutters for Earrings
Share
Choose a polymer clay cutter by deciding where the detail in your earring will come from. An outline cutter leaves the surface open for your own colors and patterns. An imprint cutter cuts the outer shape and presses a decorative design into the clay at the same time.
Then check the size and purchase option. A small single-piece dangle and a long linked earring can use quite different components, even when they share the same arch shape.
Outline or imprint: which suits your design?
An outline cutter makes sense when you want to show a marbled sheet, color blocks, or a pattern you have built in the clay. With less surface detail from the tool, those choices stay visible.
An imprint cutter gives a single-color piece a motif. It is useful when you want a flower, leaf, or other decorative line to be part of the shape. The impression is recessed into the surface.
| Collection | What the tool adds | A design to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Organic & Arch | Base silhouettes, including links, arches, and split shapes | A plain Soft Arch pair, or a linked earring with a separate upper component |
| Boho Arch Floral Imprint | An arch outline with a botanical impression | A single-color pair using Tulip, Fern, or Retro Daisy |
| Blossom Drop Imprint | A teardrop outline with a flower-inspired impression | A tapered floral dangle using Petal Burst or Stamen Bloom |
Plan the finished size, including the hardware
A size labelled 30 mm is the listed cutter option, not the total length of an assembled earring. Ear wires, rings, and extra clay components change the finished proportions. Check the listing’s measurement information, and ask us if you need a particular dimension confirmed.
For example, Organic & Arch and Blossom Drop list 25, 30, 35, and 40 mm options. Boho Arch Floral also has 20 mm options. These are choices within those listings, not a size rule for every Routerbox design.
Sketch the components at the size you are considering and cut them out in paper. Place the actual hardware beside them. This helps you spot a top piece that crowds the floral detail or a lower piece that makes the earring longer than you intended.
Check “single design,” “full set,” and orientation
A product photograph may show a whole collection while the selected option is one design. In Organic & Arch, for example, “25 mm / (F) Soft Arch” and “25 mm / Full Set (8 Designs)” are separate purchase choices. Confirm both the size and design fields before ordering.
On products that offer them, Left and Right are opposite orientations. A Mirrored Pair includes both. This is useful for a directional animal or leaf design when you want the earrings to face toward each other. A repeated, symmetrical shape may not need a mirrored option.
Physical cutter or digital STL file?
A physical Routerbox cutter is a tool we 3D print in PLA bioplastic. A digital STL product is a file for printing a tool with your own 3D printer and slicer; no physical cutter is shipped with that digital purchase.
If you want a ready-made tool, choose a physical listing. If you already print your tools, check the files, sizes, and digital STL license included with the digital listing. Do not assume a physical and digital product contain identical options.
Match the cutter to your clay setup
Routerbox recommends a minimum clay thickness of 3 mm as a starting point. With our imprint cutters, that setup produces an impression about 1 mm deep. Try your selected clay and tool on a scrap piece before cutting a batch; the feel of the clay and pressure will affect the impression.
Keep PLA tools away from heat. Rinse gently in cool plain water after use, and avoid hot water, dishwashers, and ovens. More product details are in the Routerbox FAQ.
